Miking Techniques
Upright Bass
The frequency range of the bass is between 41 Hz(on a four
string) to harmonic overtones up to 7000 Hz. Mic placement
is usually between 6 inches and 2 feet, with the mic aimed
toward the f-holes. With pizzicato or jazz bass playing
styles, you may want to mic closer than you would with arco(bowing)
to get a more defined sound. Also, some jazz upright players
have a pickup installed on the bridge, and may want to mix
the direct signal with the miked signal for a fatter, more
compressed sound(especially with a high frequency cut on
the eq of the direct signal).
