Miking Techniques

Trumpet
The frequency range of a standard Bb trumpet stretches from 165 Hz to overtones of around 15000 Hz. The lower frequency ranges(below 500 Hz) project evenly in all directions, but as the frequency range gets higher(above 1500 Hz) the sound becomes much more directional. Due to the air-tight sealed nature of a trumpet the SPL(sound pressure level) can be very high(up to 130 dB). Traditional mic placement is slightly lower and off center from the bell from about 1 foot or more away. You can use dB pads built into some mics at closer distances, if required. Also, you may want to use mic windscreens at closer distances to prevent damage to more sensitive mics from wind blasts.
