Miking Techniques

Trombone
The tenor trombone has a frequency range from 82 Hz to overtones of 10,000 Hz when played very loud. Frequencies below about 400 Hz project evenly in all directions, but frequencies above 2000 Hz are much more directional(although not quite as directional as with a trumpet). Often with classical trombone, distant miking is used in a large hall or reverberant room. Non-classical trombone miking usually involves a mic distance between 2 and 12 inches, with the mic slightly to the edge of the bell. The player should play a little off center of the mic, to reduce signal clipping, and wind blasts. With a trombone section, it is perfectly acceptable to use one mic inbetween two players and record them both on the same track, as the same eq and stereo panning is desired for both.
