Mixing Troubleshooting

Annoying midrange ringing on snare drum EQ-cut around 2 kHz
Re-record w/ mic placed on outside rim or outside the rim of drum, or try different microphone
Vocals don't sound airy enough EQ-boost from 8 kHz to 20 kHz
Compression-cut around 150 Hz and compress
Bass guitar is too muddy EQ-cut around 250 Hz, boost by ear 3 kHz-10 kHz
Re-record w/ less bass boost, or DI. Poss. mix DI w/ miked cab track
Vocals sound too close or upfront Reverb-Larger room or hall setting, less mix % Chorus-Subtle, wide, slow settings, less than 50%
Vocals sound too muddy and distant Reverb-less mix, smaller room
Effects-less
EQ-boost from 8 kHz to 20 kHz
Vocals sound too nasal EQ-cut by ear 1.5 kHz to 3 kHz, boost 8 kHz-20 kHz
Re-record w/ condenser mic placed farther away, and 6-12 inches above vocalist's head
Tom drums ring w/ bass or snare drum attack Gate-set so tom attack triggers gate, then closes
for the snare and bass hit
Cymbal overheads sound too bell-like,
annoying mid range ring
EQ-cut by ear 1.5 kHz to 3 kHz, boost 10-20 kHz Re-record w/ condenser mics higher and placed over the edge of cymbals, not over bell of cymbals
Guitars sound too bright, and upfront Effects-try chorus, flanger, or phaser, and/or reverb
EQ-boost by ear 300 Hz to 600 Hz
Synth or string synth too muddy EQ-boost 10-20 kHz
Drums sound too close, upfront Reverb-on drum submix
Mix sounds too sparse Panning-automate a sweeping pan from left to
right on background part ex. synth, electric guitar
Levels-automate volume swells on lead guitar, etc.
Add-string synth, single voice at a time, not chords, not unison
Drums sound to sparse Reverb-try adding more reverb than usual, or
a larger room setting
Add-aux percussion, shakers, cajon, cymbal swells w/ mallets
Vocals too sparse Delay-automate delay at the end of phrases Reverb-large hall setting
Add-second recording in unison, or copy same vox to new track and EQ, and effect differently
