Miking Techniques
French Horn
The frequency range of the horn range from 65 Hz to harmonics
around 3500 Hz. Most horn sections in an orchestra have
a portable reflective wall behind them, because the bell
in the playing position is pointed backwards. The horn players
are traditionally placed at the back of the orchestra with
their wall, because of this. A good sound can be obtained
by placing an omni directional or figure eight pattern mic
between the players and the wall. This gets the best mix
of direct and reflected sound. If you wanted more of the
reflected sound, you could also place the mic in front of
the players. The reflected sound is a little darker sounding,
while the direct mic sound is a little brighter.
