Mixing Tips
Delay:
Delay is used like reverb, to add
depth to a mix. With a delay effect, you're adding a slightly
delayed signal to the original track. If this is used with
short delay times of 8-25 milliseconds, the sound is perceived
as thicker and fuller. If delay times of greater than 25
milliseconds are used, the listener begins to perceive the
delayed signal as a seperate sound. Short delay times are
great for making vocals sound richer. It creates a doubling
effect, fooling the brain into thinking there are two vocalists
singing. Delay times of 35-45 milliseconds can create depth
on certain tracks. Just like reverb, you can't use delay
on everything. Delay can be used to good effect contrasting
the use of reverb on some tracks. If you use delay on lead
vocals and reverb on background vocals, for instance. Or,
you could use delay on background vocals and reverb on lead
vocals. Just like reverb, you may not want to go crazy with
the bass frequency instruments. Usually, bass guitar and
bass drums aren't mixed with any reverb or delay.
