Miking Techniques

Clarinet
The practical sonic spectrum of the clarinet sound is somewhere between 147 Hz and 12,000 Hz. The sound of the clarinet radiates almost entirely from the finger holes at frequencies between 800 Hz and 3,000 Hz. As the pitch rises more of the sound radiates from the bell. One of the best single mic placements is with a cardioid, hypercardiod, or omnidirectional mic aimed towards the lower fingerholes between 6-12 inches away from the clarinet. For more of a room sound, you can try experimenting with a second omnidirectional mic pointed away from the clarinet at a greater distance from the clarinet. If there seem to be any frequency problems with this second mic, try reversing the phase on the second mic. Also, a bloomlein, XY, or SMS technique can work well for the room sound (also pointed away from the player). Remember, you're mainly trying to capture the reverberation and room sound with these additional mics. Whenever possible, always audition the sounds for the player and get their response
